Quinnipiac Opens with Victory

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Ted Dimond
(Marblehead, Mass.) scored three goals as the Quinnipiac University
men’s lacrosse team opened the 2009 season with a 13-5 win at
Wagner, Saturday afternoon. Mike Gast (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and
Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) also added a pair of goals each as the
Bobcats improved to 1-0. The Seahawks, also playing their opener,
fell to 0-1.
Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.), Gary Messina (West Islip,
N.Y.), Garett Kerr (Inglewood, Ontario), Zach Dendas (Branford,
Conn.), Zach Pall (Setauket, N.Y.) and Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.)
also added a goal apiece for the Bobcats. Oppenheimer had a
team-high four assists, while Messina added two. A.J. Alessi
(Branford, Conn.), Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.) and Kerr also
registered one helper each.
Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) made 13 saves to earn the win in
net for the Bobcats. Meanwhile, Peter Rubin took the loss for the
Seahawks, making 15 saves.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the early going, the Bobcats bounced
back with seven consecutive goals to take a commanding, 7-2 lead.
Dimond scored all three of his goals in the span as the Bobcats
would never trail again.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Feb. 21, when they travel to
Queens, N.Y., to take on St. John’s. The game is scheduled to
begin at 1 p.m.
