Bellarmine Beats Detroit Mercy 18-8 in Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --The Bellarmine University
lacrosse team had a highly successful season opener, defeating the
University of Detroit Mercy 18-8 this afternoon at Owsley B.
Frazier Stadium on Bellarmine's campus.
The Knights broke on top early as Chase Williams netted a goal off
a pass from Ray Finnegan just a minute and a half into the game.
Bellarmine goalie David Haas shut out the Titans in the first
period as the Knights took a 4-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of
action.
Sean Doyle led the Knights with seven points on five goals and two
assists. Midfielder Derek Hopcroft also had a strong game for the
Knights as he contributed four goals and an assist.
Detroit was led by Matt Gregson, who scored four points on two
assists and two goals.
Bellarmine Head Coach Jack McGetrick took advantage of the
Knights' big lead to get some playing time for his younger players.
In fact, all 46 players who suited up saw action for Bellarmine.
Eight different Bellarmine players scored goals, and 13 found the
scoring column.
The Knights start the season at 1-0, and the Titans fall to 0-2 on
the season.
Bellarmine goes on the road next week as they face Robert Morris
University in Moon Township, Pa., at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.
