Monastero Scores Six in Colgate Win

from press release

Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored six times and Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) added five more goals as 16th-ranked Colgate downed Canisius 15-11 in men's lacrosse action, Friday afternoon at Tyler's Field.

Monastero added an assist late in the game for a seven-point evening, while Corp dished out three helpers for an eight-point performance.  Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) was the third Raider to post a multi-goal contest with a three-goal, one-assist showing.  Colgate improved to 1-0 overall, while Canisius fell to 0-1.

With the game knotted at 5-5 late in the second quarter, Colgate took the lead for good on Monastero's third goal of the game with 1:42 left in the half.  The Raiders tacked on two more scores in a 13-second span with less than 40 seconds left before intermission and raced to the locker room with an 8-5 advantage.  After Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.), who finished with four points in the season opener, fed Monastero for his third goal of the opening half with 39 seconds left, Corp tallied his fourth score of the opening half 13 seconds later after the senior All-American candidate stole a clearing pass by goalie Bryan Jack and fired the ball into the empty net.

Colgate stretched its lead early in the third quarter as Monastero scored back-to-back man-up goals at 14:44 and 10:58 to increase the advantage to 10-5.  Canisius closed to within 11-8 with 1:11 left in the third on an even strength goal by Adam Jones. However Colgate pulled away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with two more man-up goals by Colleluori at 12:46 and the Monastero at 10:03.

The Golden Griffins were paced by Jones' four-goal effort, while Simon Giourmetakis and Justin Rychlicki each scored twice.  Nick LoCoco notched a goal and three assists in the defeat.

Junior Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) tallied nine stops in goal for Colgate, including turning aside four Canisius shots in the third period.  Bryan posted nine saves as well for the Golden Griffins.

Colgate got a strong boost in its man up situations as it converted six of 12 opportunities.  Canisius failed to score on its two chances.  The Raiders held the advantage in shots 35-26.

Colgate heads south for its next two games in ACC country.  The Raiders will open with seventh-ranked Duke, Friday afternoon in Durham before closing the road trip Sunday at fourth-ranked North Carolina.
