Monastero Scores Six in Colgate Win

Nick Monastero (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored six
times and Brandon Corp (Chittenango,
N.Y.) added five more goals as 16th-ranked Colgate
downed Canisius 15-11 in men's lacrosse action, Friday afternoon at
Tyler's Field.
Monastero added an assist late in the game for a seven-point
evening, while Corp dished out three helpers for an eight-point
performance. Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage,
N.Y.) was the third Raider to post a multi-goal
contest with a three-goal, one-assist showing. Colgate
improved to 1-0 overall, while Canisius fell to 0-1.
With the game knotted at 5-5 late in the second quarter, Colgate
took the lead for good on Monastero's third goal of the game with
1:42 left in the half. The Raiders tacked on two more scores
in a 13-second span with less than 40 seconds left before
intermission and raced to the locker room with an 8-5
advantage. After Ian Murphy (Constantia,
N.Y.), who finished with four points in the season opener,
fed Monastero for his third goal of the opening half with 39
seconds left, Corp tallied his fourth score of the opening half 13
seconds later after the senior All-American candidate stole a
clearing pass by goalie Bryan Jack and fired the ball into the
empty net.
Colgate stretched its lead early in the third quarter as Monastero
scored back-to-back man-up goals at 14:44 and 10:58 to increase the
advantage to 10-5. Canisius closed to within 11-8 with 1:11
left in the third on an even strength goal by Adam Jones. However
Colgate pulled away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter
with two more man-up goals by Colleluori at 12:46 and the Monastero
at 10:03.
The Golden Griffins were paced by Jones' four-goal effort, while
Simon Giourmetakis and Justin Rychlicki each scored twice.
Nick LoCoco notched a goal and three assists in the defeat.
Junior Tim Harrington (Lutherville,
Md.) tallied nine stops in goal for Colgate,
including turning aside four Canisius shots in the third
period. Bryan posted nine saves as well for the Golden
Griffins.
Colgate got a strong boost in its man up situations as it
converted six of 12 opportunities. Canisius failed to score
on its two chances. The Raiders held the advantage in shots
35-26.
Colgate heads south for its next two games in ACC country.
The Raiders will open with seventh-ranked Duke, Friday afternoon in
Durham before closing the road trip Sunday at fourth-ranked North
Carolina.
