BC's Preseason Prep, Trip to Newtown

As winter break came and went, I grew more and more excited to get back to school to begin my final preseason journey with my teammates. The Boston College women's lacrosse team returned back to campus in early January and immediately began to prepare for preseason. We have been working hard to meet one of our team goals: beat Notre Dame on Feb. 15.

These past few weeks have been about building on old concepts and learning new ones. The team is focusing on perfecting our offense, defense, and draws; all to help us bring our best foot forward for the season-opener. We have never had the opportunity to play Notre Dame before and the team is looking forward to traveling to South Bend to kick off our 2014 season.

Another team goal of ours is mental toughness. We believe there is no better way to practice mental toughness than to be in situations where mental toughness is vital for the desired outcome. This really comes into play during our practices, conditioning and lifting circuits. We push each other to accomplish our challenging training schedule, which always helps us become better athletes on the field and closer teammates off the field.

This year, our team was able meet with the campus nutritionist, Sheila Tucker, to help us ensure what we are eating and drinking is beneficial to our performance. As athletes, we burn a tremendous number of calories while practicing, lifting and conditioning. In order to have the energy we need to perform our best, she advised us how important it is for all of our meals to contain carbohydrates and protein in addition to at least three food groups. She also informed us how important it is to stay hydrated during practice, and that is more than just drinking water. Different sports drinks contain carbohydrates and electrolytes, which bring energy to your muscles and hydrate you faster.

Besides preparing for the season, this is also a time our team takes to give back to our community. This year, BC Lacrosse traveled to Newtown, Conn., to host a lacrosse clinic. Once in Newtown, we were so happy to meet and get to know all of the girls. They were so excited and eager to learn new lacrosse skills, and seeing the joy and smiles on their faces lit up the entire room. These children have been through a lot over the past year and a half, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to spend the day playing lacrosse with them as well as hanging out and getting to know them on an individual level. As a senior entering my last season, these are some of the best times I know I will fondly remember.

Our team has so much fun together and we will do whatever it takes to push each other to the next level in order to be successful. I cannot wait for the competition to begin and will be sure to share our success along the way.
