Newtown Youth Lacrosse Releases Statement

updated 12.16.2012 at 9.41 p.m.

The Newtown Youth Lacrosse Association (NYLA) has reacted to the tragedy Friday that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Connecticut town.

"Today our town was shattered by a senseless tragedy," a message on the association's website read Friday. "We ask that all of those in our lacrosse community take the time to pray for the victims and their families. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with all of you on this sad day."

In a post on the association's website Sunday, it said that leaders from various youth sports associations in Newtown met and decided to organize its resources for an event open to all children in our community on Monday at a local youth center. There is time allotted for children ranging from pre-K age to high school.

"At this time, we have been informed by members of the Newtown Board of Education that Newtown Schools are closed on Monday," the NYLA said.
