Mikey, Casey Powell to Work as NLL TV Analysts
Mikey and Casey Powell will debut as CBS Sports Network analysts for National Lacrosse League broadcasts April 7, a CBS spokesperson confirmed to Lacrosse Magazine on Friday.
USA Today sports media columnist Michael Hiestand originally reported an official announcement would come Friday, but that announcement will come next week, the spokesperson said.
The brothers will work together with play-by-play voice Brent Stover in their debut game featuring the Philadelphia Wings at the Buffalo Bandits at 7:30 p.m. The trio will also call the NLL title game on May 19. For the six other CBSSN broadcasts of NLL games this season, either Mike or Casey will serve as a solo game analyst alongside Stover.
In November, the NLL and CBSSN reached a two-year agreement to air games during the 2012 and 2013 season. The network is showing five regular-season and three post-season games, all that will air live in high definition on Saturday nights in the first primetime weekly television package in league history. ESPN3 is also currently airing a package of NLL games.
CBSSN will also air 14 live Major League Lacrosse games this year and 12 episodes of "Inside the MLL," as well as selected Patriot League men's lacrosse games this college season.
Casey Powell, a former league MVP, isn't playing NLL this season. He was a member of the now defunct Boston Blazers last season and had 81 points (34 goals, 47 assists) in 15 games. But over the summer as a member of the MLL's Hamiltion Nationals he suffered a knee injury in the final seconds of the outdoor pro league's championship game that sidelined him for this NLL year. He was picked up by the Rochester Knighthawks in the Blazers' disperseal draft in September, but Powell was only cleared to play a week before Champion Challenge in late January, when Powell played for the U.S. men's national training team against Denver. Casey has also hosted a show "Inside the NLL" on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Mikey Powell has never played in the NLL. In a 2007 LaxMagazine.com story, Casey was quoted as saying about his brother Mike: "He didn't want any part of it. I think he could do well in this league, no doubt about it. Nobody would be able to catch him out there. But we [Casey and brother Ryan] won't pressure him, he's on his own agenda. We do it because we love it. It's hard to commit yourself with all the travel and Mike's just not ready for it."
