Back Injury Sidelines Delaware's Eric Smith
Delaware senior attackman Eric Smith, the team's top returning scorer, has a disc injury in his back that will sideline him for at least two months. A school spokesperson confirmed the injury after Smith sat out the Blue Hens' season opener Saturday, a 19-6 victory over Detroit Mercy.
Smith scored 25 goals and added 20 assists for Delaware in 2011, tying Grant Kaleikau with a team-high 45 points. Red-shirt freshman Tom Holland started in Smith's place Saturday and had a goal and an assist. Kaleikau did most of the heavy lifting on offense with four goals and four assists. Junior attackman Sean Finegan added four goals.
Smith can play attack or midfield, versatility the Blue Hens will miss with upcoming road games at No. 12 Bucknell, Loyola and No. 2 Johns Hopkins the next three Saturdays.
